Join Hong’s Beginner’s Tai Chi Class – it’s good for your health and well-being!

I’ve been attending Hong’s 8 Form Yang Style class for beginners since the start of this course in January. Apart from a bit of cycling and walking I haven’t done any formal exercise since I packed up golf twenty-plus years ago. So at age 71 was increasingly feeling pain in my back, knees and hips.

The course is now coming to the last couple of the eight forms and I am definitely feeling the benefit. Attending the hourly group lessons with Hong has given me the incentive to change my lifestyle (It’s never too late!). At the start of each lesson we do a good set of simple but effective warm-up exercises. Now every morning before breakfast (and no excuses!) I do these, along with a similar warm-up exercise from Hong’s YouTube channel. It only takes fifteen to twenty minutes. I then do some simple routines with resistance bands. This forty-five minutes of exercise gets my day off to a good start. In addition I’m doing more walking and I walk the mile or so into town now instead of using the car and practise Tai Chi when I can. For those who know Prestatyn, I can now walk up Fforddlas without knee or hip pain.

So in the next couple of weeks or so those of us who started the course from the beginning will have learned the eight forms, which put together only takes about three to four minutes. Now we must keep practising to remove the mistakes and make the movements look more natural, before perhaps moving on to the next level? For those who joined the course part way through, I would definitely recommend carrying on when Hong starts a new course and they will benefit greatly.

    ……..and practise!

As Hong reminds us every week, nobody can learn Tai Chi in just one hour a week. I have Hong’s online course which I can use anytime to practise. She takes you through every movement in detail so you can repeat until it’s second nature. Although it can be difficult to copy Hong when she is facing the camera, I use these clips to study the correct placement of arms, hands, etc etc. and then follow Hong when her back is to the camera. If you can cast the video to a smart TV that would be ideal, or I use a projector.

What I’ve learned is that to get the full benefit you have to make a commitment to this. Don’t think of it as just a new hobby – it’s much more – to Hong and many other like-minded people it’s a way of life and one that makes a lot of sense in our busy lives!

    Chris Porteous. July 2026.
